Save the Children USA: Georgia Field Office

Save the Children USA established its presence in Georgia in 1993. Since then, Save the Children has successfully implemented various humanitarian aid, development and civil society strengthening projects funded by USAID, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Program (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Program (FAO), SDC [WHAT DOES SDC STAND FOR?] and other donors. The complex program of Save the Children aims at providing assistance to the vulnerable groups in Georgian society - Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), street children, high risk groups affected by HIV/AIDS (Acquired Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus) - as well as addressing the needs of the developing civil society. Save the Children has also proven its expertise in community mobilization techniques. One of the important components of almost all Save the Children programs in Georgia is cooperation with the local stakeholders, community development and constituency involvement to the actual programs. JSI entered into a subagreeement with Save the Children in September 2003 under the HWG Program. As an HWG partner organization, Save the Children is committed to implement women's health information, education, behavior change communications and community mobilization assistance in HWG-targeted facilities and communities in Imereti.

The Fund "Orthos"

Orthos is a Georgian non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 1997. The general aims of the Fund are prevention of maternal and children's morbidities, psychosocial rehabilitation of disabled children and their families, protection of women's and children's rights, and realization of civil education. Since its founding, with funding from Georgia's business and private sectors, Orthos has worked to provide charitable consultations for children with pediatric, neurological and orthopedic diseases including bronchial asthma and cerebral palsy, and treatment and rehabilitation for vulnerable persons with skin diseases. In 1999-2000, Orthos helped establish a coordinating council for charitable activity, with a membership of 40 organizations. In 1999, Orthos also received funds from another Georgian organization, "Horizonti", to establish "Parents' Schools" - an innovative concept for Georgia, later expanded by Orthos with funding from UNICEF (the United Nations Childrens Fund), Germany's aid agency, GTZ, and Mercy Corps. Parents' Schools provide information and consultation in reproductive health for parents, and are located in health facilities in which women deliver their babies. Parents choose to participate either before or after the birth. Selected health personnel are specially trained to serve as Parents' School facilitators, and they hold courses on various subjects in maternal and child health. Since 2000, Orthos has established three Parents' Schools in Georgia - in the Tblisi Chachava Institute of Perinatal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology; the Gori Maternity Hospital and Khulo Maternal and Child Regional Health Center. With Mercy Corps funding, a Parents' School will be established in the Kaspi region. Under the HWG Program, JSI entered into a subagreement with Orthos to establish three additional Parents' Schools in the Imereti region - in Kutaisi, Zestaphoni and Chiatura respectively. Orthos also works on issues of family violence and on informing Georgian society about the conditions of disabled persons, in order to affect society's attitudes. The Fund publishes a high quality magazine for mothers and fathers on parenting, health issues and child care, which is sold commercially and from which Orthos finances some of its activities.
